| Notes: | per Chapman's History of Edgefield Co, p. 442: (in Roll of Company A - SC 19th Reg't, Co A, SC Volunteers): John M. Cato, age 22, wounded at Chickamauga and Marietta (this may explain why his name is shown as enlisting two times). Brothers also served in same unit: Hiram Cato, age 20, Sergeant; killed in battle, New Hope Church; Whitfield Cato, age 17. per ECP: John M. Cato's family owned acreage about 2 miles south of Monetta, South Carolina, where the Wagener Hwy (now SC-Hwy 39) crosses Carolina Bay Rd. and where the 2-story (red-bricked in 1990's) house of his son, Will, still stands. John M. Cato was born in a house near the one he later built, off the highway, and where all of his children were born. His house was struck by lightning and his great-granddaughter Emmie remembers seeing it burn to the ground (1930's?). Willa May Cato Yonce included John M. Cato in her research list. |
